About

Subak Cooking Class began as a small family tradition in the heart of Ubud. For generations, our family has prepared authentic Balinese dishes using recipes passed down from our grandparents. What started as everyday cooking at home slowly grew into a passion to share our culture through food with travelers from around the world.

We opened Subak Cooking Class with one goal — to let visitors experience the warmth, flavors, and traditions of a true Balinese home. Every class is led by members of our family, creating a friendly environment where guests can cook, learn, and laugh together as if they are part of our own household.

Our Philosophy

In Bali, cooking is more than preparing food — it is a ceremony of togetherness. Every meal carries stories, beliefs, and the spirit of “gotong royong,” or working together as one.

At Subak Cooking Class, we embrace:

  • Authenticity, by preserving traditional recipes and techniques
  • Connection, by teaching the cultural meaning behind every ingredient
  • Simplicity, by showing that anyone can cook Balinese dishes
  • Local wisdom, by using fresh produce from local farmers and markets

Our kitchen is not a staged studio or commercial venue — it is a real Balinese home where everyday life happens. This is what makes the experience special.

The Experience We Offer

When you join our cooking class, you are not just learning recipes. You are stepping into a Balinese household and experiencing our daily life.

Your journey includes:

  • A guided tour of a traditional Ubud market
  • Learning about Balinese spices and herbs
  • Cooking 9 authentic Balinese dishes with hands-on guidance
  • Understanding the meaning behind ingredients and rituals
  • Sharing a beautiful Balinese meal together after cooking

Our goal is for you to leave with more than new cooking skills — we want you to take home memories, new flavors, and a deeper appreciation of Balinese culture.

Meet the Family

Subak Cooking Class is run by our family team — hosts, instructors, helpers, and storytellers. Each of us contributes something different:

  • Some of us teach the techniques of Balinese spice pastes
  • Some guide you through the market
  • Some help prepare ingredients and keep the kitchen flowing
  • All of us share the same love for our culture and our guests
  • You’ll feel the warmth of Balinese hospitality from the moment you step in.

Why We Use the Name “Subak”

The word Subak represents Bali’s traditional irrigation system — a symbol of harmony, community, and sustainability. These values inspire our cooking class:

  • Working together
  • Respecting nature
  • Sharing what we have
  • Creating balance in life and food
  • This is the spirit we want every visitor to feel.

Our Mission

To preserve the richness of Balinese culinary heritage and share it with people from around the world through an authentic, educational, and heartwarming cooking experience.
